Appalachian Trail Stories

Appalachian Trail Stories is a site for thru hikers, and future thru hikers. We will never presume to be an all-knowledgeable reference for thru hikers, but rather an information resource; a place to be heard; a place to listen; a place to share your story and to share in the stories of others. Imagine Appalachian Trail Stories as a virtual campfire if you will.

All are welcome here, regardless of their position on any hiking related issues, so please keep that in mind as you share your story and opinions with others.

Appalachian Trail Stories, Volume I, is a cooperative book project, about hiking the Appalachian Trail. It is the realization of a vision that came to me in the fall of 1999. My desire is to publish a series of books containing the experiences of hikers on the AT - both section hikers and thru hikers - that will capture the imagination of future generations of outdoor enthusiasts; who ultimately will be responsible to see that our natural resources - like the Appalachian Trail - are preserved for generations to come. It is inspired by the now out of print, two volume Rodale Press series, Hiking The Appalachian Trail, which inspired my own thru hike of the trail in 1999.

Come on over by the campfire and sit yourself down. Enjoy the stories and hiking journals you find online, submit a story yourself, take part in The Longest Thru Hike, a fun little interactive story, submit a story for publication in a future volume of Appalachian Trail Stories, the book, and tell all your friends about us, so that we may grow and become one of your campfires of choice on the Internet.

Any suggestions to make your visit more interesting and valuable to you, the hiking community, will be graciously considered.

Sincerely,

Paddler - AT Class of '99
